Norway’s Norsk Hydro said its 55.3%-owned joint venture, Slovalco, will resume 75,000 tons per year of primary production in the fourth quarter of 2026, following a new long-term power supply deal with a state-owned hydropower utility and an EU carbon cost compensation scheme.
The remaining 100,000-ton capacity restart hinges on post-2030 conditions and additional power contracts. Slovalco halted output in September 2022 due to high electricity prices, which had caused financial losses.
The restart will bolster Europe's aluminium supply, which has been squeezed by the Mozal smelter closure in Mozambique, the EU's new carbon tax, and war-related supply disruptions in the Gulf.
