Cymat Technologies has executed a commercial agreement with Rio Tinto Alcan to absorb customers of its aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) business.
Rio Tinto is exiting the sector after over 40 years to streamline operations, transferring client relationships and sales development to Cymat. To support the transition, Cymat plans to establish MMC manufacturing at its Mississauga facility, supported by MMC producer MC21's technology.
The deal imposes payments of US$750 per metric ton on Cymat for five years, capped at US$500,000.
Capital costs are estimated at US$2 million, with full commissioning anticipated in the early second quarter of 2027. Projecting annual incremental revenue between US$7.5 million and US$10 million, Cymat expects the deal to reduce input costs and drive future profitability.
