Aluminum Corporation of China Limited (Chalco) is investing US$1 billion to build a 1.2-million-ton annual capacity alumina plant and port infrastructure in Guinea. This venture represents Chalco's first overseas alumina facility.
Initially, the Beijing-based state-owned producer will hold a 95% stake, leaving 5% for the Guinean government. However, Guinea retains an option to purchase additional shares up to 35%.
This expansion meets Chalco's "two seas" strategy to secure raw bauxite materials and optimize its supply chain. Since domestic smelting capacity approaches emission ceilings set by Beijing, Chinese producers increasingly target international assets.
Furthermore, global market dynamics favor this move. London Metal Exchange (LME) aluminum prices have risen by 22% this year because Middle East war disruptions have squeezed global exports.
The Guinea project currently awaits final regulatory and shareholder approvals.
