TRIMET Aluminium SE, an aluminum manufacturer and processor in Germany, switched the energy supply at its Gelsenkirchen port recycling plant to hydrogen-rich coke oven gas sourced from ArcelorMittal's Bottrop facility via Uniper Energy Sales.
The gas, containing more than 60% hydrogen, powers melting furnaces to generate process heat. This operational change cuts direct annual CO2 emissions by approximately 4,000 tons, representing a 25% reduction.
The project forms part of a plant modernization that expanded annual recycled aluminum capacity by 20% to 70,000 tons.
TRIMET also installed a 600 kW photovoltaic system across 3,000 square meters for on-site electricity and plans to feed industrial waste heat into Gelsenkirchen's district heating network. Besides, the infrastructure upgrade prepares the melting furnaces to transition fully to pure hydrogen when economically feasible.
