Vedanta’s aluminum production capacity expansion project at its Jharsuguda aluminum smelter plant was blocked as the Odisha High Court imposed restrictions for the environmental permit.

Vedanta planned to increase the annual production capacity at the Jharsuguda plant from the current 1.6 million tons to 1.8 million tons, with a captive power plant (CPP) capacity increased to 1,215 megawatts. The expansion plan needed land acquisition, while the land acquisition process is still facing legal disputes of the public hearing of the project.

The Odisha State Pollution Control Board has held a public hearing to hear people's complaints about the expansion project, but disputes were raised over effectiveness due to low participants.

Two residents of the village appealed for the second time for the intervention of the High Court.
