Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 30-day pause on US tariffs on Canadian imports, including aluminum.

US President Donald Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Mexican and most Canadian imports and 10% on Chinese goods, triggering trade war concerns that might weaken global economic growth and reignite inflation.

Expectations that Canadian aluminum shipments will be diverted have lowered European aluminum prices. The European duty-paid premium on COMEX fell by more than 10% to roughly US$322/ton.

The US imported 5.46 million tons of aluminum in 2023, of which Canada supplied 3.08 million tons, accounting for 56%. The EU imported almost 158,000 tons of aluminum from Canada in the first 11 months of 2023, just 2.9% of its total demand.
