It was reported that two US’ Democratic Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and two House lawmakers wrote to President Trump faulted that Trump’s trade policies, no matter the Phase 1 trade deal with China or the 10% tariffs on China’s aluminum imports, failed to solve the problem of China’s aluminum overcapacity and even let Americans lose their jobs.
They called on the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) to stop the exemption on Section 232’s aluminum tariffs and urged the government to work with allies to stem China's predatory trade practices.
Alcoa, the largest aluminum producer in the US, said that the firm was forced to shut down its aluminum smelter in Washington and about 700 jobs were cut due to weak prices and continuously increasing global oversupply.
