The US intended to impose a 25% increase on Chinese US$200 billion in goods. Chinese aluminum wheels were also on the list, which put significant pressure on Chinese aluminum wheel exports. Therefore, the China Aluminum wheel Quality Institute (CAW) convened more than 20 wheel companies exporting to the US to file a complaint with the US Trade Representative Office, requesting that aluminum wheel products be excluded from the list or reducing the import tax rate.

According to the statistics of the International Trade Organization, in 2017, the import volume of aluminum wheels in the US reached around 43.8 million, and that from China accounted for 70%. Since the US market was dependent on aluminum wheel imports from China, so it was impossible to find the other suppliers in the short term.

If the US imposed a 25% tariff on imports of aluminum wheel from China, the direct result was to increase the import prices of the US itself, making the automobile manufacturing industry in a dilemma.
