Rio Tinto and Japan's Sumitomo Corporation will build Australia's first hydrogen plant to reduce carbon emissions in the alumina refining process.

The plan is part of the Yarwun Hydrogen Calcination Pilot Demonstration Program. The plan was approved now with A$32.1 million in co-funding from the federal government's Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). According to the data, if the hydrogen plant is completed, it will reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the Yarwun refinery by about 3,000 tons per year, and it is expected to produce alumina equivalent to 6,000 tons per year.

At present, the plant has completed its front-end engineering and design study (FEED). Construction of the hydrogen plant and calciner will start in 2024, and the plant is expected to be operational in 2025.
