Smelters of electrolytic aluminum in China's Yunnan Province were asked to cut production twice since September last year due to low rainfall levels that affected hydropower generation. Approximately 40% of companies’ operating rates were lowered during the period.
However, the electricity supply to smelters in Yunnan will be raised gradually in late June due to increased rainfall, which will resume some production capacity in the region, according to sources.
Hydropower generation accounts for around 70% of the total power supply in Yunnan, the province. The aluminum capacity in the province totals about 5.25 million tons.
