South32, a mining and metals company headquartered in Australia, was expected to double its green aluminum production in Brazil by early 2023 with the acquisition of an 18.2% interest in Alcoa Corp.’s Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN) bauxite mine, which raised South32’s stake in the MRN mine to 33%.
In addition to a 33% stake in the MNR mine, South32 also holds a 36% interest in the Alumar alumina refinery and a 40% interest in the Alumar aluminum smelter.
The annual bauxite production of MNR’s open-pit mine totals 18 million tons, which is supplied to the Alumar refinery and the smelter.
