RUSAL is the second largest aluminum producer in the world, second only to China enterprise. Its aluminum exports in September decreased by 8.6% month-on-month. As Russia was accused of intervening in the 2016 US presidential election, in April this year the US sanctioned the country's related industries and commercial activities to reduce Russian power, and RUSAL was one of the targets.

It was known that the sanctions threaten to disrupt supply chains for parts critical to automotive and aerospace industries in the US. In September, the US Treasury Department announced that CEO Oleg Deripaska must withdraw RUSAL bonds, equity and other assets before November 12th, to persuade the US to lift the sanctions.

RUSAL's total export volume from January to September was around 2 million tons, an annual decrease of 0.6%. Last year, RUSAL sold total of 4 million tons, of which 42% were for Europe.
