RUSAL, a global leading aluminum supplier in Russia, has launched legal action against mining giant Rio Tinto Group, seeking to restore RUSAL's 20% share of alumina production at its joint-venture alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland.
According to documents, RUSAL claimed Rio Tinto didn’t have the right to fully control Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL), of which Rio Tinto owns 80% share and RUSAL holds the remaining 20%, after Australia imposed sanctions on Russia over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, one of which was to stop alumina and bauxite supply to RUSAL.
RUSAL said that Rio Tinto's full control of the management of the joint-venture alumina refinery is invalid, which actually deprived RUSAL of its right to receive a corresponding proportion of the alumina supply, equivalent to around 750,000 tons of alumina per year.
