The third-quarter production report released by the global mining company Rio Tinto showed that the company’s bauxite output reached 15.1 million tons in the quarter, hiking by 3% compared to the previous quarter and by 8% from the third quarter of 2023.

The increase in the third-quarter bauxite output was due to the higher plant availability and utilization rates with the implementation of the Safe Production System, especially since the Amrun mine at Weipa was operating beyond nameplate capacity.

In the reporting period, Rio Tinto produced a total of 809,000 tons of aluminum, a quarter-on-quarter and a year-on-year drop of 2%.

In early August, the electricity usage at the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) was reduced by 185 MW, thereby affecting output. The power supply has been resumed. The smelter started to raise production in late September, and the output growth was expected to continue till the second quarter of 2025.
