Rio Tinto's aluminum production totaled 759,000 tons in the third quarter of this year, up by 4% compared to the previous quarter and down by 2% from the same period a year ago, due to the Kitimat smelter’s production resumption and increase and the Boyne smelter’s cell recovery as expected.
The Kitimat smelter in Canada reduced production due to a strike last July and resumed production at the end of the second quarter of 2022. However, the problem with the alumina conveyor system slowed down the rate of pot restarts in the third quarter.
Australia's Boyne aluminum smelter cut production in the second quarter due to the epidemic, and it was resuming production in the third quarter. However, Boyne Smelter has been increasingly impacted by surged coal prices in Queensland.
