Rio Tinto reported that its aluminum output totaled 736,000 tons in the first quarter of this year, falling by 3% compared to the previous quarter and also dropping by 8% from the same period a year ago. The decrease was mainly due to the Kitimat smelter strike in British Columbia. However, the production capacity of smelters was expected to increase, making the total output meet 2022 guidance.

In the first quarter, Rio Tinto’s bauxite output kept flat year on year at 13.6 million tons, and the figure was up by 4% from the previous quarter.

In terms of alumina, Rio Tinto produced 1.9 million tons during the period, a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 1% and a year-on-year drop of 7%, mainly caused by unplanned refinery outages.
