Rio Tinto announced a C$226 million investment in its Grande-Baie smelter in Quebec, Canada. This funding will refurbish two anode baking furnaces and conduct feasibility studies for replacing scrubbers and overhead bridge cranes at the anode production center.
The refurbishment, set for 2025-2026, involves rebuilding the concrete shell and refractory lining of the furnaces. This upgrade aims to ensure a competitive supply of anodes to the Grande-Baie and Laterrière plants for decades. Additionally, Rio Tinto plans to offset carbon emissions from the project by planting trees near the aluminum smelter.
