It was reported that Rio Tinto is cooperating with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena) to study whether hydrogen generated from renewable energy can replace natural gas and be applied in the calcination process in alumina refineries so as to reduce carbon emissions.

Both sides will jointly fund this feasibility study. The research will be carried out at Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, Queensland.

Rio Tinto aims to achieve net-zero emissions at its business by 2050, reduce 15% emissions by 2030, and cut emission intensity by 30% from a baseline of 2018.
