Rio Tinto announced that it decided to close its New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) on Tiwai Peninsula amid a hard market condition and high costs.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson expressed his disappointment on this decision made by Rio Tinto.
The shutdown was expected to impact more than 1,000 jobs. Moreover, the decision will cause a surplus of power supply in New Zealand’s South Island since NZAS was a large domestic electricity consumer.
