Norwegian aluminum producer Norsk Hydro’s new aluminum recycling plant in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, has started production. The plant has an annual capacity of 90,000 tons, mainly supplying metals to the automotive industry.

The recycling plant has an initial annual processing capacity of 15,000 tons of post-consumer scrap aluminum, and the capacity will increase with the growing demand for recycled, post-consumer aluminum.

The new plant is located near Hydro’s aluminum extrusion plant in Szekesfehervar, which has manufacturing and surface treatment capabilities, primarily supplying aluminum components to customers in the automotive industry. The extrusion and manufacturing process creates scrap, which will be then returned directly to the furnaces at the new recycling plant, where a few days later the re-produced aluminum is extruded into new automotive components.

Hydro is now operating 34 recycling facilities in Europe, North America, and South America, with an annual capacity of more than 2.3 million tons of aluminum.
