It was reported that Malaysia announced that all bauxite miners must conduct an environmental impact assessment before regaining the production licenses.
The Resources Ministry said that although the ban on bauxite production and exports would be end on March 31st, it did not mean that miners could start production immediately on April 1st. It took 6 months at least for each bauxite mine to finish the environmental impact assessment, and the bauxite miners must complete strictly the assessment in accordance with relevant regulations to obtain a production license.
Malaysia used to be one of the largest exporters of bauxite, but in early 2016, the bauxite mine polluted the water in Pahang, East Malaysia. Due to this accident, Malaysia put a temporary ban on bauxite production.
The postponed production on the Malaysian bauxite would affect global supply and make the market prices increased.
