According to the report, the UK commodities tycoon Mr. Sanjeev Gupta was taking into consideration of purchasing the Alcoa’s aluminum smelter in Portland, Province of Victoria in Australia, which was expected to be a part of global expansion into the aluminum industry and to prevent the Australian facility from the possible shutdown.
The Liberty House Group had already possessed two smelters, one in Fort William, Scotland and the other one in Dunkirk, France.
Gupta's Liberty House Group, Alcoa and other stakeholders, and Victorian government had been discussing the deal over several weeks; however, the deal had not been officially confirmed yet.
