According to statistics from Japan’s Ministry of Finance, Japan imported around 95,600 tons of primary aluminum in August, falling by 16% compared to the same month a year ago.

The drop was due to weak demand in the domestic construction industry and a slowdown in exports. Japan’s construction demand has remained sluggish due to a decline in housing starts and aluminum use.

Statistics from the Japan Aluminium Association (JAA) showed that Japan’s exports of aluminum sheets and extrusions in July slid by 5.1% year on year, the 17th monthly drop. However, exports of these products have also been decreasing on account of an economic downturn in Asia.

An aluminum trader said that Japan’s imports of primary aluminum might continue to drop until stocks are adjusted to healthy levels.
