Japanese Aluminum roller UACJ planned to compete with China aluminum imports by providing better quality and greater customer services. Three-month aluminum futures on the London Metal Exchange (LME) were about US$2,200/ton in late 2017.
After Trump imposed the importing duty on aluminum, the aluminum futures price decreased to US$2,000/ton in March. Lots of Chinese aluminum products were getting into Southeast Asia after the US imposed extra 10% importing duty on aluminum products.
UACJ was through the merger of two Japanese big aluminum mills Furukawa-Sky Aluminum and Sumitomo Light Metal Industries. UACJ invested US$329 million improve quality at a major Thai aluminum subsidiary mill and also increased their capacity around 80% in June, 2019.
The actions were to compete against Chinese big imports to Southeast Asia markets. There was a great demand for aluminum which was applied for cans and air conditioners in Southeast Asia.
