Japan's buyers agreed to pay the fourth-quarter aluminum premium of US$220/ton for shipment from October to December. This premium price was 19% higher than that in the third quarter. It was the fifth consecutive quarterly increase and hit the highest level since the April-June quarter in 2015.

This increase in the price indicated the rising premiums in Europe and the United States due to tight supply. However, Japan's local supply was not as tight as it was in Europe or North America.

In addition, the dropping of automobile production due to a global chip shortage might cause a slower demand for this light metal.
