It was reported that Jan Bitenc of the Ljubljana of Chemistry developed the use of anthraquinone cathode for aluminum-ion batteries in the experiment.

Anthraquinone cathode could double the energy density while more environmentally friendly, as the anthraquinone, an organic, had higher energy content than pure graphite.

Patrik Johansson, the team leader of the Chalmers University of Technology, said that the discovery could reduce production costs and had positive environmental implications.

Actually, until now, aluminum batteries had been left behind by lithium-ion batteries because of their energy density problem, while the discovery could make them more competitive.

Anthraquinone cathodes had the advantage that it could make the electrolyte stored more positive charges, so as to improve the energy density of the battery.
