According to data from Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the country’s aluminum exports rose significantly by 36% to around 1.7 million tons in 2017-18 fiscal year from 1.2 million tons in 2016-17 fiscal year.
However, the aluminum imports declined at the same time. It was basically supported by US’ sanctions on Russian UC Rusal and led to insufficient aluminum supply for the global market.
The main destination for aluminum exports was South Korea, contributing about 31% among total Indian exports. Other major importing countries were Malaysia and the US, accounting for about 30% and 11% respectively. Imports of aluminum dropped 15% year-on-year to 360,000 tons from the previous year.
Indian total aluminum production also rose by 21% year-on-year to 3.4 million tons roughly. The output was expected to be maintained at same level to 3.4 million tons in next fiscal year.
