According to report, Aluminum Association of India suggested the government to limit the imports of the metal by lifting up basic customs duty for all products.

The association asked for import duty across all aluminum products for 2.5% to 5%. It showed the domestic capacity was sufficient but 60% of the country's demand had been met from imports.

Aluminum imports were observed from a big surge in these years and mostly from China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and West Asia for those have the surplus aluminum capacity.

Indian aluminum industry has experienced rising import duty on aluminum scrap with primary aluminum metal to encourage the recycling of domestic scrap and limit rising scrap imports.

However, the industry was scrap import-dependent even with enough scrap in the domestic market.
