According to a notice issued last Wednesday (June 1), Hydro Rein and Macquarie Asset Management’s Green Investment Group (GIG) have planned to jointly build a wind and solar power project, Feijão, in northeastern Brazil, with a combined capacity of 586 MW.
The total investment was estimated at US$700 million. The final investment decision for the wind farm was expected in the fourth quarter of this year, and that for the solar project will be made at a later stage.
The power project will provide the electricity required by Hydro's Paragominas bauxite mine. Besides, the wind power and solar power will be used to replace the current coal through 2030, thereby reducing carbon emissions from Hydro’s Alunorte alumina refinery.
The project will become an important promoter to push Hydro move toward its target of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030.
