Since the aluminum industry is highly energy-intensive, Germany's aluminum industry is preparing to develop contingency plans to cope with the natural gas crisis as a preparation for the worst situation, said Hinrich Mählmann, president of the German Aluminium Association (GDA).
There is no easy way to replace natural gas, nor can it be done in a short time. A survey showed that nearly 90% of German aluminum companies couldn’t turn to use other energy if natural gas is not available in the short term. Most companies will stop production if 30% of the natural gas supply is cut.
In Germany, the energy-intensive industries are increasing the lobbying efforts to prevent fuel rationing in a gas supply emergency.
