The European Union's plan to gradually ban Russian aluminum imports has sparked mixed reactions in the market. The proposal allows European buyers to import up to 275,000 tons of Russian metal within a year before the full ban takes effect.

While the impact on primary foundry alloy (PFA) is expected to be significant, the effect on aluminum billet imports may be limited.

Industry sources warn that Russian aluminum may be rerouted through Turkey, where it is processed and indirectly reenters the EU market. However, weak demand for aluminum products in Europe, particularly in the struggling automotive sector, may dampen the overall impact of the ban.

Meanwhile, US President Trump has reiterated his plan to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian aluminum, but industry players see little immediate effect on the European value-added aluminum market. Many remain cautious, awaiting concrete actions before assessing potential disruptions.
