The EU agreed on February 19 to impose a new round (the 16th package) of sanctions on Russia. The new sanctions include a ban on imports of primary aluminum from Russia. The EU had already banned imports of certain aluminum-made products from Russia, but the new round of sanctions extends the ban to cover primary aluminum, no matter if it's imported in the form of ingots, slabs, or billets.
Except for raw materials, the latest round of sanctions also expanded the blacklist targeting Russia's "shadow fleet." 73 vessels, owners, and operators (including captains) suspected of belonging to the "shadow fleet" is inked in the blacklists. After this increase, the total number of vessels will reach more than 150.
In addition, the new sanctions will remove 13 Russian banks from the SWIFT electronic system and suspend the broadcasting licenses of eight Russian media outlets.
The agreement is expected to be formally adopted when foreign ministers meet in Brussels on Monday, February 24.
