According to the report, due to the shortage of the aluminum precursor on shutdowns of refineries in Shanxi, the imports of alumina keep rising.

The data showed that alumina imports rose to the level between 60,000 to 160,000 tons per month, and the April imports rose to 56,800 tons roughly.

China’s monthly average usage of alumina for the year was around 54,000 tons. However, China only imported around 27,200 tons in March, according to China’s General Administration of Customs' data.

The Beijing government has ordered to shut down 2.8 million tons of annual alumina-smelting capacity at Xinfa Jiaokou Feimei; also, an additional 400,000 tons capacity at Shanxi Xiaoyi Huaqing Aluminum’s smelter due to the worries of the release of red much in the region. It was also believed that the shutdown will continue in 2-4 months.

The market saw that China’s domestic supplies will be tight on more environmental concerns. Also, bauxite imports were seen to be at high volume on falling inventory in port. Stocks were now around 26 million tons, which dropped by 23% from last week.
