According to the report from China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA), the imports of alumina in China were expected to double to around 1 million tons this year from 510,000 tons last year, which was mainly due to the shortage of domestic alumina supply.

Besides, the exports of Chinese alumina were obviously down to around 169,500 tons in the first 4 months this year, compared to 1.46 million tons in 2018.

The main shortage occurred in Henan province and Shanxi province, which were two main alumina production base in China. In addition, there were 5 alumina projects being postponed recently in Liaoning province, which forced producers to invest projects overseas.
