Brimstone, a cement maker based in California, planned to produce smelter-grade alumina using carbon-free calcium silicate rocks by 2030, reducing US reliance on imported alumina and bauxite.

The process, part of its decarbonized cement production, also produces portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as co-products.

With nearly US$8.7 million in federal funding, Brimstone aims to start pilot operations in 2025 and open a US$378 million commercial demonstration plant by the end of the decade, strengthening domestic alumina supply chains and creating jobs.
