According to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), Rio Tinto's smelters in New Zealand and Australia currently produced aluminum mainly through hydropower.

ASI has awarded Rio Tinto's performance standards and production and marketing chain certification to the Amrun and Weipa mining operations, the Yarwun alumina refinery, the Port of Bell Bay and New Zealand Aluminium Smelter Limited (NZAS) aluminum smelters.

The certification strengthened Rio Tinto's position in the global aluminum supply chain and paved the way for its Canadian operations.

In 2018, Rio Tinto became the first aluminum supplier to be certified by ASI.
