Due to the increased available power in Yunnan, a main aluminum producing area in China, the aluminum smelters in this province have been ready to increase their production.
Yunnan had previously faced a serious drought and hydropower output had also decreased a lot, thereby impacting the local aluminum capacity, 70% of which depends on hydroelectricity.
With the increased available power, approximately 2.35 million tons per year of aluminum capacity are expected to recover in Yunnan.
However, the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) said in an earlier report that aluminum production would be limited due to an electricity shortage in the summer caused by low dam levels.
