After the Aluminum Association's annual meeting in October, the association worked on the situation of the aluminum sector and its perspective on the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The aluminum demand was under growing in the past decade, and the demand in North America was growing up more than 2% year-to-date in 2018 through July. The Aluminum Association supported a free trade agreement that included the US, Canada and Mexico. However, the association was very disappointed that the agreement didn't take away Section 232 tariffs.

The current Section 232 tariffs were actually making the US aluminum industry less competitive globally by adding up the cost of raw materials. Although aluminum demand kept going up, the trade and regulatory uncertainty brought more challenges in the aluminum market.
