It was reported that 2 factories which belonged to Alcoa in A Coruña and Avilés will be closed, and total 686 employees will be affected. However, factory in Lugo was still running.
Alcoa said that those 2 factories suffered from serious financial loss because of the price surging of energy, alumina and other raw material.
In June 2017, Alcoa president Roy Harvey visited the factory in Avilés and already gave a warning that the high electricity price in Spain will lead to a serious problem. The Spanish industry and tourism department said that Alcoa did not disclose any decision for factory's closure and now they were requesting Alcoa's procedure to look for alternatives for factory's shut down and mass layoff.
