It was reported that Alcoa Corporation planned to cut half of the production at its Aluminerie de Bécancour smelter in Quebec, Canada for encountering workers dispute and being impacted by US tariff.
Alcoa is the world’s eighth largest producer of aluminum, headquartered in Pittsburgh.
The levy of US tariff has increased the shipment cost from Alcoa’s plants to the US. There was one disaster after another as the workers started the strike and many employees were locked out the plants since January.
The labor dispute ended in the result of shutting down the smelter’s two potlines. Alcoa spokesman, Jim Beck, said those salaried employees including retired and resigned ones had taken care of extra works to cover the shortage of workers since January 11th.
Therefore, the company needed to take actions to adjust the production line. The United Steelworkers delivered its expectation to conclude this negotiation process by December 21st.
