Alcoa indicated that they will not accept binding arbitration talks with the United Steelworkers union (USW) to end the 14-month lockout at Aluminerie de Bécancour (ABI) aluminum smelter in Quebec.

About one thousands of union workers have been locked out since January 11th, 2018. All negotiations have failed to have a breakthrough so far.

Jim Beck, the spokesman in Alcoa, said its management remained devoted resolving the labor conflict and improving the long-term productivity of the smelter. Although Alcoa proceeded sincerely the negotiation, the binding arbitration will not ensure the future of ABI.

Meanwhile, Alcoa cancelled all bargaining meetings that were scheduled with the USW in the coming weeks. It made the USW have no choice but to ask the Quebec government to intervene in the dispute.
