Steel Dynamics, Inc., a US-based steel producer, broke ground on its US$2.5 billion low-carbon, recycled aluminum flat-rolled mill in Lowndes County, which is one of the largest economic development projects in state history.
The new aluminum flat-rolled mill covers an area of 2,000 acres and will create more than 800 new jobs.
Steel Dynamics CEO Mark D Millett said that the company chose Lowndes County as the plant location due to the beverage, automotive, and other markets.
This new state-of-the-art aluminum mill was scheduled to be put into operation by the summer of 2025.
