The Slovenian aluminum company Talum will close its remaining aluminum electrolytic furnaces in April as the high electricity prices eroded the company’s profits.

Talum has recently shifted to aluminum processing and other production activities with higher profits.

Due to the rapidly increased energy prices, Talum slashed its primary aluminum production to approximately 20% of its capacity in 2022. The European electricity price has risen by ten times since the beginning of 2021, which put the highly energy-intensive aluminum industry at risk.

Talum is one of the top ten primary aluminum producers in the world. The company’s annual production of primary aluminum is 50,000 tons and that of aluminum products is more than 110,000 tons.
