Hydro Alunorte, the world's largest alumina refinery outside China located in Brazil, has inked an agreement with Wave Aluminium to build a plant to process bauxite residue, which is solid waste discharged during alumina production.
The plant will be built at Hydro Alunorte in Pará, Brazil, and was scheduled to be put into operation by 2024.
The processing capacity of this plant is likely to be expanded to 2 million to 4 million tons per year. The project will support Hydro’s goal to reach a utilization rate of bauxite residue of 10% by 2030 and eliminate the need to store new bauxite residue forever by 2050.
