Shanghai aluminum price surges to 9-month high on Aug 20
2019/08/22
According to the data from the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), Shanghai aluminum surged to a record high on August 20th since its highest level in October 2018, which was up by 1.2% to RMB 14,455/ton. It was believed that the surge was caused by the supply disruption in Chinese top producer.

Recently, a power disruption of aluminum smelter occurred in northwest China, which had caused annual production of 500,000 tons to be entirely suspended. It was said that the shutdown capacity amount of the smelter was as much as 1.4% of total Chinese aluminum output in 2018.

However, market participants believed that this surge would last three to five months and it was unknown how much actual production loss would be, depending on the lasting time only.
