Around 900 workers at an aluminum smelter in Kitimat owned by Rio Tinto, a leading global mining group, went on a strike on Sunday (July 25) due to failure of reaching an agreement between labor and management.

Unifor Local 2301, representing the workers, failed to reach an agreement after a nearly 7-week negotiation with the management. Therefore, the workers began to go on a 72-hour strike on Sunday.

The union said that the negotiation will continue until the strike ends. Rio Tinto said on Sunday that it would devote itself to seek cooperation with the workers and achieve a win-win result.
