Hydro's recycling plant in Clervaux, Luxembourg recently produced 130 tons of near-zero carbon aluminum (CIRCAL 100R) with 100% post-consumer aluminum scrap. The company is now working to optimize production.
Trond Olaf Christophersen, Head of Recycling Unit in Hydro, said that the result is an important stepping-stone for the commercialization of near-zero carbon aluminum and a good test of their ability to produce recycled aluminum in other regions using a similar scrap mix.
Hydro's 2025 strategic plan showed that it would strengthen the company's position in low carbon aluminum by investing in recycling projects. By 2025, the post-consumer scrap recycling volume would be doubled, and the annual recycling EBITDA would be raised by NOK 0.7 to 1.1 billion.
