In the second quarter ended December 2021, South32’s alumina production totaled 1.3 million tons, rising by 4% compared to the previous quarter. The aluminum output amounted to 246,000 tons during the period, a year-on-year decrease of 1%.

Despite a strong performance in the second quarter, South32 still warned its shareholders that the shortage of labor force and freight problems caused by the COVID-19 epidemic would affect the global operations this year.

In the first half of the year, South32’s alumina output was down by 4% year on year to 2.6 million tons, and the aluminum production remained at 494,000 tons.

South32 CEO Graham Kerr said that through the acquisition of primary aluminum smelter Mozal and the restart of the Alumar aluminum smelter in Brazil, the company’s aluminum production was expected to increase by around 24% to 1.2 million tons in 2023.
